Larry’s Got That Coaching “Jones” Again
Posted by Jeff Sack under Main
Do you think that there may be a 12-step program for former professional coaches, who just can’t kick the habit? I picture a room filled with guys like former NFL head coach Dan Reeves, former MLB skipper Jimy Williams, former college coaches like Jerry Tarkanian. The sponsor says to the group that they have a new member that would like to share his story. A sharp dressed man with short cropped grey hair and glasses, gets up from his chair, clears his throat and says “Hi, I’m Larry, and I’m a coaching addict.”
Though I truly doubt such an organization exists, there is no doubt Larry Brown does suffer from the terrible disease of coaching addiction.? He thought he finally had the monkey off his back after his days in New York, but like all addicts, it’s one day at a time. Thursday Brown officially announced he had fallen off the wagon. The Philadelphia Inquirer reported Thursday that indeed, Brown once again needs a fix, he wants to be on the sidelines somewhere next season, whether in college or the NBA. Here is Brown talking to reporters about his addiction “I’ve got to figure out if I can get a coaching job. I want to get back so bad. I’m so bored. I just miss it. I don’t miss the games so much, but I miss being around the coaches and the players. I still have something to offer. After my last experience, I just want to go where I can do a better job and move forward!”
If those are not the words of a man with a serious addiction, then I don’t know what is. Growing up in the 1960’s and 1970’s, I saw a lot of friends struggling to get and stay straight. It’s tough man, once you get that feeling you can’t live without it. At least Larry is lucid enough to realize that he is weak, that he needs to give in to temptation. Recognizing you have a problem is always the first step.
There never have been any doubts about Larry Brown’s ability as a coach, he is among the best of his generation. His commitment however gets shaky pretty quickly. I guess it’s kind of a cross between a Don Juan complex (love them and leave them) and a Mount Everest complex (after you?climb to the top, what do you do?) At?Brown’s?age and temperament, I personally would be shocked if he ends up at a college. Larry Brown going on the road and recruiting? Come on now! No he will end up next November, in Memphis, or Chicago, Milwaukee, or maybe some place we are not aware an opening will most likely take place. But just remember Larry the buzz will eventually wear off, most likely in some hotel in the snow in February. Not a pretty picture is it???
