Twenty years after Larry Brown as coach and Danny Manning as unstoppable forward won the NCAA Championship for Kansas Coach Bill Self, and forward Darrell Arthur who recorded a double-double, brought the NCAA Championship back to Kansas as the Jayhawks defeated the Memphis Tigers in an overtime battle Monday 75-68. The game was truly a series of runs, with Kansas fortunate enough to be the beneficiaries of the final one.

The contest went back and forth through the first few minutes as the two teams were tied at 13-13 with 12:05 left in the first half. That’s when Kansas made the first significant run of the evening as they went on?a 9-2 run capped by an Arthur dunk, putting them ahead 22-15 with 8:31 remaining in the first half.? The Tigers roared right back taking the lead at 26-24 on a Chris Douglas-Roberts trey with 6:22 to go in the half.? The Jayhawks grabbed the upper hand at the end of the first half as the led 33-28.? The second half started out very much like the first as both teams took turns holding the lead through the opening minutes. But this time Memphis made the first big run of the half as they pulled ahead 54-47 when Derrick Rose drove the lane and put it up and in, got fouled and hit the shot at the line with 5:10 left to go. Kansas cut the lead to just a deuce as Arthur drained the cylinder to make it a 62-60 game with 1:00 in regulation.? Rose hit one of two at the line to make it 63-60, with 10 seconds left, a second later Mario Chalmers hit a trey to tie it at 63-63, which is the way regulation ended. Memphis appeared drained in the extra period, and though Memphis would get within striking distance a couple of times Kansas kept pulling away to win the game.

Darrell Arthur scored a team high 20 points, 10 boards, Mario Chalmers scored 18, Brandon Rush scored 12, and Sherron Collins came up big off the bench as the guard scored 12 points. Memphis was led by Chris Douglas-Roberts who scored a game high 22 points, 1 rebound, 1 assist, Derrick Rose in what many believe will be the freshman point guard’s lost college game, scored 18 points, 8 assists, 6 rebounds, Robert Dozier recorded a double-double, 11 points, 10 boards.
