One thing is for certain in New York these days - the New York Knicks have only 5 games to go in this season before they yet again rebuild the team; however, a question out there continues to linger: will team coach Isiah Thomas be around for next year’s version of the Knicks?? According to Marc Berman of the New York Post, newly installed team president Donnie Walsh is inclined to let Thomas serve out the rest of the season as the team’s coach, but is mum on what next year will bring for him.? As things stand right now, Thomas has a meeting with Walsh on Wednesday to possibly determine Thomas’ future with the Knicks.

Thomas appears to be lobbying for a front office position with the Knicks, but last week, Walsh himself said that he wanted to meet with Thomas first before any rash decisions are made.? In my opinion, I expect Walsh, after his meeting with Thomas, to more or less give him his pink slip.? With all of the dysfunction that has went on in the hallowed halls of Madison Square Garden (the sexual harassment suit against Thomas, the player revolts - namely the one involving guard Stephon Marbury, etc. - and the general lack of unquantified talent on the Knicks’ roster, there?are plenty of reasons for Walsh to start over with a clean slate.

One thing that has to change is the meddling of team owner James Dolan.? It was he who fostered the dysfunction that has been happening at MSG; if Walsh is to do the job he has been charged to do, it will only work successfully if Dolan simply leaves Walsh alone so he can do his job with as little interference as possible.? Thomas, on the other hand, assuming he is released from the Knicks (which I expect to happen after the end of the season), has been speculated to perhaps land some kind of job with the Detroit Pistons.? Thomas is still well-liked in Motown, and?his relationship with the team is improving, especially with team president Joe Dumars; whether that equates into a job offer is anyone’s guess, but I’d suggest that Dumars think long and hard before he offers Thomas any kind of job within the Pistons organization.

So to summarize, when the smoke clears, I expect the following to happen: Walsh will inform Thomas that his services are no longer needed with the Knicks, and Dolan will approve the move.? If the Knicks want to improve from their current sorry state, letting Thomas go and starting fresh and with as little interference from Dolan as possible.? I nearly forgot - the Knicks will need to find another head coach, but I’ll save that for another op-ed?when Thomas is given his pink slip by Walsh.
