It was pretty academic that the Golden State Warriors had nothing to play for Wednesday night, hosting the Seattle SuperSonics; on the other hand, the Sonics may have played their last game as a Seattle franchise.? and as such, they obviously wanted to go out on a high note.? How fitting it was then as Kevin Durant scored a career high with 42 points, leading Seattle to a season-ending, 126-121 victory over Golden State in the season finales for both teams at Oracle Arena.
Both teams put on an entertaining mix of fast-break basketball, as both teams put up 204 shots between them; Seattle and Golden State put up points by the bushel in the first half as the Sonics went into halftime with a score that reminded people of the ABA days: 68-60; the Sonics would outscore the Warriors 27-20 in the third period and then proceed to hold off the Warriors despite Golden State putting up 41 points in the final period.? Seattle’s high scorer was the aforementioned Durant with 42 points, 13 rebounds, 6 assists, a steal and 2 blocks – easily his best game as a pro; Jeff Green scored 27 with 10 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals.? Earl Watson added 17 with 3 rebounds and 12 assists while Nick Collison chipped in with 16 along with 13 rebounds, a steal and 2 blocks.
Golden State had 6 players in double-digits, led by Monta Ellis with 24 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists and a steal while Baron Davis scored 21, including 5 three-pointers, 6 rebounds, 7 assists and 2 steals; Andris Biedrins added 20 with 17 rebounds, a steal and 3 blocks while Marco Bellini, from off the bench, had his best game of the season as he scored 17, including 5 treys, 2 assists and a steal.? Seattle end their season with their worst record in franchise history, 20-62, while Golden State had the second-best record of an NBA team not to make the playoffs: 48-34.
