In a move that surprised none of us here at?Slam Dunk Central?the NBA announced Tuesday that New Orleans Hornets coach Byron Scott has been named NBA Coach of the Year. Earlier this month Scott was the unanimous choice of all three columnists at Slam Dunk Central when we gave out our own version of the NBA Regular Season Awards. Scott along with Chris Paul, David West, Peja Stojakovic, and Tyson Chandler were the most pleasant surprise of the NBA season. The Hornets won their first Southwest Division title. The Hornets ended the regular season with a record of 56-26, and made the Post Season for the first time in? four years. After receiving the Red Auerbach award for being the best coach in the Association, Scott spoke with the media. He told reporters “This is a very humbling experience for me because this is something you never think about. All I think about is getting great guys and trying to make them better and trying to win basketball games, so this is very special. I’ve got an unbelievable group of guys that I enjoy being around every day. They are a special group. I love them dearly. There’s not a coach in this business that has a better job than I do.” The Hornets coach was the first place choice of 70 of the voters, Boston coach Doc Rivers got 23 votes, and Houston’s Rick Adelman received 17.
