All David West needed was the outfit made out of Lycra and the cape, as he played like a comic book superhero recording a double-double, and leading the New Orleans Hornets to a 101-79 decimation of the San Antonio Spurs Tuesday night. West scored a game high 38 points in the game five victory, giving his team a 3-2 edge over San Antonio. Don’t look now but the defending NBA Champs are on the verge of elimination in their Western Conference Semi-Final series.
The first half was played well by both teams as they both kept the score close throughout the first 24 minutes. San Antonio had a slim 23-21 lead at the end of the first quarter. They were able to pad it slightly in the second quarter, as they walked into their locker room up at the half 47-44. But this whole series has seen the home team prevail, and the fans at the New Orleans Arena were given a lot to cheer about in the second half. The Hornets made their adjustments in the locker room during the break at the half, and came out energized and aggressive in the third quarter. New Orleans held the Spurs to just 11 points in the third quarter, as they went off for 28, and it was a brand new ballgame at the end of the third quarter with the Hornets leading 72-58. The Spurs were never a threat in the final quarter.
David West scored 38 points, grabbed 14 boards, 5 blocks, 5 assists, and 2 steals in his monster performance. Chris Paul played Robin to his Batman as he also recorded a double-double, scoring 22 points, dishing off 3 rebounds, 1 steal, Mo Peterson scored 12 points, 4 rebounds, 2 steals. Jannero Pargo scored 10 points off the bench 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal.
Manu Ginobili scored 20 points, 7 assists, 2 rebounds, for the Spurs, Tony Parker scored 18 points, 4 assists, 1 rebound. Tim Duncan scored 10 points, but dominated the glass as he grabbed an incredible 23 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 block, Bruce Bowen scored 10 points, 3 rebounds. Game six will be Thursday night in San Antonio, with the Hornets leading the series 3-2.
