???????????????????????????????????????????????????? Memphis Grizzlies

Man oh man, it must be very uncomfortable if you are a front office type for the Memphis Grizzlies.? I mean think about it - they have the fourth-best odds to get the number one overall pick in the 2008 NBA draft lottery on Tuesday and yet they have what has to be a very difficult decision: do they draft according to need or do they take hometown hero and top-ten (probably number one) pick?Derrick Rose?from the University of Memphis?? There’s definitely some compelling arguments to both sides of this.

Let’s start with need.? The Grizzlies have a need at power forward, as opposed to point guard (the position that Rose plays).? With that in mind, Michael Beasley from Kansas State would make the most sense as he without a doubt would start for Memphis.? Besides, the Grizzlies are top-heavy at point guard with Mike Conley, Kyle Lowry, Javaris Crittendon and maybe Juan Carlos Navarro, who is a restricted free agent.? Even without Navarro, they have 3 players at the 1-guard.? The only reason to draft Rose - and it’s a dumb reason in my estimation - is to put some butts in the seats at FedEx Arena.? What held true in the past still rings true today - winning puts people in the seats - and the Grizzlies’ best chance, assuming they get the number one pick, is to draft on need.? And in their case, that would be Beasley.? To draft Rose or anyone else at this juncture would be foolhardy and short-sighted.
