Jazz Expected To Re-Sign Williams

In what would be a key decision that would affect the Utah Jazz both in the short- and long-term, Ross Siler of the Salt Lake Tribune reports that the team - as early as July 1 - could sign point guard Deron Williams to a 5-year contract worth upwards of $80 million which would keep Williams in Salt Lake City until the 2013-2014 season.? If what Williams and Jazz coach Jerry Sloan told the Tribune was any indication, then the signing will most definitely take place; Williams told the Tribune, “That’s the plan.? I definitely love it here.? I think we have a great team, a great coaching staff and have a chance to win.? That’s the thing that’s most important to me.”? Sloan added, “That would be an important thing for this franchise and I think that’s the direction they probably are leaning.? I don’t think they’ll let him get away.”

Assuming Utah re-signs Williams, it would be huge as he could very well opt to sign a shorter, 3-year deal much like LeBron James and Dwyane Wade already have done.? While I do not claim to be a salary cap expert, I do know that the Jazz cannot afford to let Williams get away as his numbers from this past season (18.8 PPG, 10.5 APG) make a strong case for a long-term contract.? Any extension that the Jazz sign Williams to would not actually kick in until next season, but they can offer him more money sooner than any other team in the league, so the team has some things working in their favor.? Knowing team owner Larry Miller, the signing of Williams is just a formality mroe than anything else - not a matter of if but when they re-up Williams.
