Washington Wizards point guard Gilbert Arenas, according to ESPN, did what had been expected from him – he opted out of the final year of his current contract.? Arenas had said on more than one occasion that he would forgo the final year of his 6-year, $65 million contract; because he did opt out, he can negotiate with any NBA team, effective July 1.? However, Arenas – while expressing a desire to stay with the Wizards – has also said that he wouldn’t return unless the team also re-signs Antawn Jamison.? Wizards?president Ernie Grunfeld has publicly stated that he hopes to retain both Arenas and Jamison.? Arenas, in 7 years in the league, has averaged 22.8 PPG, 4.2 RPG and 5.5 APG.?
