‘Zo’s Come Back Attempt Delayed
Posted by Jeff Sack under NBA Free Agents, NBA Injuries
Alonzo Mourning may be one of the toughest men ever to play in the NBA. I’m not talking about on the court, although that applies to him also. I am talking about sheer resiliency, this man has gone through incredible physical adversity through out his career in the Association and keeps bouncing back.?Mourning?s season ended on December 19, when he was hurt during a game between the Heat and the Atlanta Hawks. The 15 year veteran who has played 11 seasons with the Heat, was trying to keep Mario West for scoring a layup for the Hawks. Mourning?s knee gave way as he crashed to the ground writhing in pain. A stretcher was brought out to the court, Mourning was put on it, but then sat up and a couple of his teammates helped him make his way to the Miami bench. Mourning underwent successful surgery the next day after tearing the patella tendon, as well as the quadricep tendon in his right knee.
After first making statements that he would not attempt a comeback, in early June said he was going to attempt to play next season. The “South Florida Sun-Sentinel” reported Friday that Mourning’s attempt to come back for the 2008-2009 season has hit a setback. Zo apparently had another procedure on his knee, and now projects to coming back about the mid-season mark. The report said because of the lack of certainty about the veteran being able to return the Heat would not be signing him to a contract before training camp.
