Olympiakos Signs Childress To Three Year Deal
Posted by Jeff Sack under Euro-League, NBA Free Agents
The “Associated Press” reported Wednesday that restricted free agent forward Josh Childress has signed a three year deal to play in the Euro-League. Childress’ agent Lon Babby confirmed that the former Atlanta Hawks player has signed a three year deal with Greek team Olympiakos, the deal is reportedly worth $20 million after taxes. Babby said that Childress will earn far more money than he would have in the NBA. Because the former first round pick by Atlanta in the 2004 NBA Draft was a a restricted free agent, the Hawks could match any offer sheet that the forward signed with a NBA franchise. Those restrictions do not apply to him playing in the Euro-League. Olympiakos is one of the premier franchises of the Euro-League finishing second in the Greek League last season. All three years of the contract are guaranteed, but Childress can opt-out at the conclusion of each season. The four year NBA veteran, spoke with reporters on a conference call, and expressed hhis excitement?about his?new situation. Childress said “It’s obviously a bit different, being the first player to do something like this. But I think it’s a great opportunity, and it’s going to be a great experience for me! I was in a situation that I really didn’t know what my answer would be when I got to Athens. But it’s a great city and a great team, and they did everything to make me feel at home.” Childress is the fifth former NBA player to choose to play in Europe this off-season, however the other four players were all born overseas.
