Happy Birthday Cuban; Now Pay Nellie His Money
Filed Under NBA Off The Court Issues | Leave a Comment
Usually when it’s your birthday you are the recipient of gifts. Friday was Dallas Mavericks Team Owner Mark Cuban’s fiftieth birthday, and though he probably did receive gifts, he did a lot of giving as well. “ESPN.com” reported Friday that an arbitrator has ruled that Cuban owes former Mavericks coach Don Nelson $6.3 million in compensation for the money due on the balance of his contract. Cuban tried to get out of paying Nelson the money because he said Nelson violated the non-compete clause in his contract when he became head coach of the Golden State Warriors in August of 2006. The arbitrator who is a retired judge ruled that not only was Nelson due the money, Cuban would have to pay it off in one payment, instead of the scheduled series of payments that were originally spelled out in the contract. Cuban would have had until 2012 to pay Nelson under the original stipulations of the deal, instead he now has to pay it all this year. Nelson’s attorney was ecstatic with the ruling calling it “an old-fashioned (butt)-whuppin’” Nelson who was reached at his off season home in Maui felt vindicated by the ruling. Nellie said “It’s a good day. I’m relieved it ended the way it did. I didn’t think I would lose and I didn’t think he would win, but you just never know when you go to court. I don’t feel like I’ve won the lottery because I’ve already earned that money, but it’s good to know I’m going to get it.”
