Marko Banic and Nikola Prkacin each scored 16 points Sunday as they led the Croatian National team over Australia Sunday 97-82 in the first round of the Mens Basketball Tournament of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The Croatians had a seven point lead at the end of the first quarter as they were up 21-14, and they never looked back. Five Croatian players scored in double figures in the victory. The Australians were led by Matt Nielsen with 13 points, David Barlow scored 12, and center Andrew Bogut had 10.

They are partying all over Lithuania, from Klaipeda, to Vilnus. Celebrating the accomplishments of their National Basketball Team, as Lithuania defeated the Argentinian National team 79-75 in the first round of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Linas Kleiza came off the bench for Lithuania, and scored a team high 13 points, leading five players in double figures. Argentinian and NBA superstar Manu Ginobili led all scorers with 19 points, but it was not enough to win the game. Lithuania last Summer?won the Bronze Medal in the FIBA Euro-League Tournament securing them an Olympic bid.?

Rudy Fernandez scored a game high 16 points, as Spain defeated Greece in their first round game of the Beijing Olympics Sunday 81-66. Teammate Jose Calderon added 13 points, and Pau Gasol contributed 11 for the team from Spain. The biggest buzz may have been about 17 year old Ricky Rubio who has the name and the looks of a pop star, while supposedly having the game of the late great Pete Maravich. Rubio came off the bench and after struggling early scored 7 points, 1 assist. Vassilis Spanoulis led the Greek team with 15 points in the loss.

Team USA had only one thing to be concerned Sunday in their opening game of the Olympic Basketball Tournament. If they treat all their host’s with as little respect on the hardwood, as they showed the Chinese National Team, they will not be invited to many parties. If there was any doubt left in any one’s mind of traces of a hangover?stemming from the 2004 Games, it is all over now. Team USA?defeated China in convincing fashion Sunday by a 101-70 margin. In the process of winning that game, they showed the rest of the planet, that they are the team to beat?for any chance at the Olympic Gold Medal. And if they keep performing as they did in their first game, all other teams in the Tournament will be playing for second place.

The first quarter of the contest was competitively played by both teams as Team USA led at the end of the period 20-16. However the Americans increased their margin at the half leading 49-37 as the two teams went into their respective locker rooms. The second half of the game the United States just flat out dominated, as they led 74-48?at the end of three quarters. The Chinese team never were a legitimate threat in the fourth quarter.

Dwyane Wade proved once again that he has made it all the way back from the injury that derailed this past?season for the Miami Heat superstar. Wade came off the bench and scored 19 points, leading all scorers. LeBron James scored?18 points, 6 rebounds, 3 blocks, 3 assists, 1 steal, starting guard Kobe Bryant, and starting center Dwight Howard each scored 13 points in the win.

As expected Houston Rockets center Yao Ming led the way for the Chinese team. Yao recorded a double-double scoring 13 points, grabbing 10 boards, 3 blocks, and 1 assist. Team USA is now off until Tuesday as they take on Angola.
