The swagger is back, the look of confidence is back in all of their eyes. During the last week Team USA has put on such an exhibition of basketball played at the highest level, that they have removed all doubt. The United States, still is the standard on this planet for the best in hoops. Yes there were questions after the Olympics in Greece in 2004, and the World Championships in Japan in 2006. But the players from Team USA got the message, it’s all about unity, and playing as a team. And with that attitude they have been unbeatable.
Monday was no different for the team that is now 5-0 in the Beijing Olympics. Team USA center Dwight Howard was a one man wrecking machine recording a double-double, and helped the United States to their easiest victory yet in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. For all intent and purposes this game was over some time in the first quarter, as the Americans bombarded Germany 106-57.
USA jumped out early on the German team as they held a 31-12 lead at the end of the first quarter. And they never really took their foot off the accelerator the entire contest, as their lead grew each quarter. Germany trailed 53-29, as the game mercifully hit the half. But it got no easier for them in the second half, with USA ahead 83-46. The United States lead was never even slightly threatened in the final period.
Howard did it all for his team scoring a game high 22 points, grabbing 10 boards, 2 assists, 2 steals. LeBron James scored 18 points, 3 rebounds, 2 steals, Kobe Bryant scored 13 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal. Dwyane Wade had another big game off the bench scoring 10 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 block, Chris Paul also came off the pine to score 10 points, 3 assists, 2 rebounds, 2 steals.
The Germans were led by Dirk Nowitzki who scored 14 points, 8 rebounds, 1 assist. Jan Jagla was the only other player on the team in double figures, scoring 10 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 block. Germany is now 1-4.
