The “Orange County Register” reported Thursday that Los Angeles Lakers General Manager Mitch Kupchak was all smiles after visiting with Lakers center Andrew Bynum this week. Bynum was lost for the season after injuring his left knee on January 13, in a win against the Memphis Grizzlies. After trying to repair the knee through rehab, Bynum finally underwent surgery on the knee in May. Kupchak told reporters that the center has made great strides in the last few weeks. Kupchak said “Andrew Bynum has dedicated another summer to getting into the best possible shape. A month ago he was cleared from the knee surgery he had and at that point he began working on conditioning and getting into shape and I thought he looked like he has made progress. I could see improvement in his body, his conditioning and mobility. I didn’t see any signs of effects from the surgery.”

Bynum was having his strongest year in the Association before getting hurt averaging 13.1 ppg, 10.2 rpg, and 2.06 blocks per game. He is expected to be in shape in time for training camp which starts the first week of October.

The “Associated Press” reported Wednesday that the “Team Formerly Known As The Seattle SuperSonics” will unveil their new name and colors on September 3. The franchise now located in Oklahoma City has reportedly applied for the trademark on six different names. They are the Barons, Bison, Energy, Marshalls, Thunder, and Wind. A television station in Oklahoma City earlier reported that the name would be the Thunder, however the team has not commented on the report.

Let’s break these names down, and see what makes sense. First of all we can rule out Barons immediately. The only type of Barons you would associate with the Southwest, are Robber Barons.  Since they are stealing another city’s team that probably would not play too well in the press. Bison, I like but it may be too close to the Bulls when you put together the logo. Energy?  What is this the politically correct choice, you’ll have a  little green sprite, to represent the environment? No, we can put that one in the scrap heap. I like Marshalls also, but that is probably too violent an image for today’s society. The Wind? What is your logo a cloud blowing with his cheeks bulging out? I mean I get the reference “Oklahoma, where the wind comes sweepin’ down the plain.” But the Wind? No!  Which I guess leaves us with the Thunder. Now is your mascot Thor the God Of Thunder?  That could be cool!  I guess we will just have to wait until September 3, to find out!

Remember when you were a kid, and you messed up and then had to tell your dad? Especially when you got hurt doing something you knew you weren’t supposed to be doing? No matter what kind of pain you were in the fear of calling your dad, or waiting for him to get home from work, was far worse than pain from any injury. I have the feeling Golden State Warriors point guard Monta Ellis had those same kind of emotions when he put in a call to team General Manager Chris Mullin. Ellis who signed a deal with the Warriors earlier this Summer for a reported six years and $66 million tore a ligament in his left ankle during a pick-up game last Thursday back home in Mississippi. “ESPN.com” is reporting that Ellis had surgery on the ankle Wednesday in Birmingham. Alabama. The procedure was said to be successful, but the guard will be reportedly out of commission for at least the next three months.

Ellis was expected to fill the role of departed starting point guard Baron Davis this coming season. This injury to say the least has the Warriors brain-trust scrambling for solutions. Ellis was going to use training camp to get better acclimated to being a point, after being primarily a shooting guard in the Association. Golden State is expected to start the season at this juncture with Marcus Williams getting the bulk of the minutes at point. Mullin told reporters that they believe that Ellis will contribute this season but with ankle injuries, setting a timetable can be tricky. Neither Ellis or his agent have spoken with reporters.

Duckworth was in  the midst of touring the state conducting free basketball clinics when he was stricken. I HAVE JUST ONE QUESTION; WHY IS THIS EVEN BEING DISCUSSED? SHOULD THIS MATTER TO SPORTS FANS?

He is known as “China’s Magic Johnson” he is the property of the Los Angeles Lakers, and he may be playing this upcoming season in the NBA. Who is this player? According to “China Daily” he is 6′7” guard Sun Yue, and the Chinese sports media, believe he will be the next star from their country in the Association. Sun according to the report, took the recently concluded Beijing Olympics quite seriously, as a venue to show case his talents to the planet. The guard who averaged 8.1 points, and a team high 2.3 assists per game, told reporters he was glad to get the world wide exposure. Sun said “I want to show myself to the world. I tried to do my best and play my part on the court. For me, every second counts at the Olympics, so I want to take the chance to let people know me.”

Sun Yue who was taken by the Lakers in last year’s NBA Draft is keeping mum on how the negotiations are going with the team from L.A. However he like so many young players would love to have the chance to play with 2008 NBA MVP Kobe Bryant. The guard was excited about his encounter with the Lakers franchise player. Sun told reporters “I met Kobe and told him I’d like to play with him next season, he said ‘OK’, and ’see you in training camp’.”
