Smith Says He And Woodson Are Fine
Posted by Jeff Sack under NBA Free Agents
There was talk last season in Atlanta, that there was conflict in the relationship between Atlanta Hawks head coach Mike Woodson, and forward Josh Smith. After the Hawks made the NBA Playoffs for the first time in eons last season, Woodson was given a new contract at the end of the season. Smith who was a restricted free agent, re-upped with the Hawks signing a deal for five years reportedly worth $58 million.
You would think that would end any talk of a strained relationship between the player and the coach. Smith knew that Woodson would be his coach when he signed the deal, that should be enough proof right there. But according to “The Atlanta Journal-Constitution” the rumors persisted despite the signing. Monday the paper reported that Smith in an interview with their NBA beat reporter, the forward said that those thoughts could not be further from the truth. Smith said “People talk, man. They’re on the outside looking in. And we’re on the inside dealing with this. Like I said, people are going to have their opinions about me and they’re going to make their assumptions about me. And I can’t do anything about that. And I honestly don’t care to. Coach Woodson and I have a good relationship. We talked several times throughout the summer before my contract was signed. We’re good.” Smith also said that he thought the team was slightly better than the team that took the Boston Celtics to seven games in the first round of the playoffs.
