File this one under “what was he thinking?” The “Associated Press” reported that Portland Trail Blazers veteran cent Raef LaFrentz will have an arthroscopic procedure performed on his right shoulder. LaFrentz has a torn labrum, which he suffered in a game against Seattle on February 22. The surgery will be conducted at Kerlan-Jobe Orthopedic Clinic in Los Angeles, on September 26. LaFrentz told reporters “I was hopeful that an off season regiment of physical therapy and treatment would heal the injury, but unfortunately it’s become clear now that I need to move forward with surgery.”

Raef, I know from experience surgery is not a fun process, and is always a last resort. But couldn’t you have figured out the rehabbing wasn’t going to get the job done say in July? Now I realize LaFrentz is just a journeyman role player at this point of his career. Most of the minutes at the five spot will be taken by Greg Oden. But to wait until the second week of September, and then have surgery makes no sense to this long time NBA observer.
