Celtics to Pick Up 2009-10 Option For Rondo

An important piece of the Boston Celtics puzzle will apparently remain with the team for at least the short-term future as according to Marc J. Spears of the Boston Globe, Celtics general manager Danny Ainge stated on Tuesday that the 2009-10 option for guard Rajon Rondo will be exercised before this season commences.

Rondo will be eligible for a long-term deal, effective next summer, that would begin with the 2010-11 season; as expected, signing Rondo to a lucrative deal during the 2010 market will have some salary cap implications for the team.  Currently, the only Celtics that have guaranteed contracts for the 2010 campaign are Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Kendrick Perkins for a total of $44 million during that span; the Celtics will also have options on rookies J.R. Giddens and Bill Walker, and Gabe Pruitt will be an unrestricted free agent.
