One would think that if two of your starters score 32 points apiece, that you would win a NBA game pretty handily, right? Actually the answer on Wednesday night turned out to be no, as Tony Parker and Tim Duncan each scored 32 points, yet their team the San Antonio Spurs lost to the Phoenix Suns 103-98. The contest was the regular season opener for both teams, and it was the home opener for San Antonio. Terry Porter the Suns new coach gets a victory in his first game on the Phoenix bench.

This was a game where there was not a lot of margin for error throughout the evening. Phoenix took the early advantage as they led 19-16 at the end of the first quarter. Both teams let the shots fly furiously in the second quarter, but the Suns were still on top at the half 49-46.  San Antonio grabbed the lead during the third quarter, but Grant Hill coming off the bench for Phoenix hit a 26 foot trey as time expired at the end of the quarter to give him team a 74-73 lead. The lead volleyed back and forth in the fourth quarter, until Amare Stoudemire put the Suns ahead to stay as he hit a mid-range jumper with 2:53 left in the contest giving Phoenix the lead for good at 96-94.

Stoudemire led the Suns with 22 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, in the victory. Leandro Barbosa came off the bench and scored 18 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, Shaquille O’Neal had a double-double, scoring 15 points, grabbing 13 boards, 2 blocks, 1 assist. Steve Nash also recorded a double-double, with 13 points, 13 assists, 2 rebounds, 1 block, and Hill also scored 13 points, 2 rebounds, 2 steals.

San Antonio is starting the campaign off without Manu Ginobili, as he is on the injured list and he was missed in this game. Duncan scored 32 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, and Parker scored 32 points, 5 assists, 5 rebounds, 1 steal. Only one other Spurs player scored in double figures, Roger Mason came off the pine and scored 12 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 blocks. Phoenix is now 1-0, the Spurs are 0-1.
