Big 3rd Quarter Boosts Warriors Past Nets 105-97

The Golden State Warriors needed a win in the worst possible way, so they could avoid their second consecutive 0-3 start; a big 3rd quarter led by Stephen Jackson‘s 20 second-half points helped Golden State secure their first win of the season Saturday night, defeating the New Jersey Nets 105-97 at IZOD Center in East Rutherford, NJ.  Problems just seemed to accumulate for the Nets as they didn’t shoot very well (42.2%) and they committed an inordinate number of fouls (39).

Warriors center Andris Biedrins scored ten points in the second quarter to give Golden State a 52-51 lead; the Warriors broke open the game in the third period as they outscored the Nets 33-18 to take a sizable 85-69 lead going into the final quarter.  New Jersey managed to reduce Golden State’s lead to 5 in the closing minutes of the game, but 4 free throws by Warriors forward Corey Maggette ensured the Warriors’ victory.

Golden State had a trio of players with 20 or more points, led by Biedrins and Jackson with 23 apiece – with Biedrins adding 11 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 blocked shots while Jackson added three treys, 5 rebounds, 8 assists, a steal and a blocked shot; Maggette chipped in with 20 along with 10 rebounds, an assist and 2 steals.

New Jersey was led by Vince Carter with 20 points along with 3 rebounds, 4 assists, a steal and a blocked shot while Josh Boone added 17 with 14 rebounds, 2 assists, a steal and 3 blocked shots.  Golden State (1-2) plays again on Monday when they fly to Tennessee to take on the Memphis Grizzlies while New Jersey (1-1) does not play again until Tuesday when they host the Phoenix Suns.
