Howard’s Double-Double Helps Magic Make Kings Vanish 121-103
Posted by Stephen Rhodes under NBA Game Recap
The Orlando Magic in their first two games this season were rather deficient, offense-wise; in Saturday night’s contest against the Sacramento Kings, they seemed to rediscover their scoring touch as they routed Sacramento 121-103 at the Amway Arena with four Magic players scoring at least 20 points. The scoring barrage came at the right time for Orlando as prior to this game, they were averaging only 84.5 PPG – second-worst in the NBA.
The Kings had all kinds of difficulty containing Dwight Howard as he hit 11-of 14 shots from the floor while the Magic had very good success shooting from the perimeter (8-of-22 from 3-point territory). The Kings’ frontcourt got whistles for 14 fouls trying to guard Howard, even with the double-teaming of the All-Star center. All told, Orlando shot 55% from the floor.
The Magic, as previously stated, had 4 players with 20 or more points, led by Howard with 29 points, 14 rebounds, 2 assists and 5 blocked shots while Rashard Lewis added 26 (including 3 treys) with 7 rebounds, 6 assists and a steal; Hedo Turkoglu pitched in with 21 along with 3 rebounds, 4 assists and a steal while Mickael Pietrus contributed 20 with 4 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal.
Sacramento was led by Kevin Martin with 31 points (including three 3-pointers), 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals while Spencer Hawes added 14 with 4 rebounds, 2 assists and a blocked shot. Orlando (1-2) plays again on Monday when they host the Chicago Bulls while Sacramento (0-3) looks for their first win of the season when they travel to Philadelphia to take on the 76ers – also on Monday night.
