The Golden State Warriors, in Monday night’s contest against the Memphis Grizzlies, did what any other team playing the Grizzlies would have done - divert their attention to Rudy Gay and rookie O.J. Mayo; but there was a problem – the Warriors forgot all about fellow rookie Marc Gasol. As a result, Gasol scored 27 points, leading Memphis past Golden State 90-79 at FedEx Forum.
Memphis led by as many as nine in the first half, taking a 49-45 lead into halftime; but Golden State stayed close, scoring 9 unanswered points midway through the third period. But in the fourth quarter, the Grizzlies applied some defense and the Warriors started missing shots; the Grizzlies would pull away with the win as a result.
The aforementioned Gasol led all Grizzlies players with 27 points, 16 rebounds, an assist, a steal, 3 blocked shots but 6 turnovers while Gay added 14 with 3 rebounds and 3 assists. Golden State was led by Stephen Jackson with 17 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assists, a steal and a blocked shot while Andris Biedrins added 16 with 22 rebounds, an assist and a steal. Memphis (2-2) plays again on Wednesday when they travel to Sacramento to face the Kings while Golden State (1-3) returns home to host the Denver Nuggets – also on Wednesday.
