Hawks Trey Attack Swats Down Hornets 87-79

The Atlanta Hawks appear to be for real, as they have opened the NBA campaign 3-0, and Wednesday night defeated one of the elite teams in the Association the New Orleans Hornets 87-79. Atlanta who put up a valiant fight in the first round of the NBA playoffs last season, have started right where they left off. The Hawks were deadly from the outside, as they shot 40% (12-30) from outside the arc. Marvin Williams and Flip Murray both had three treys, Joe Johnson, and Maurice Evans had two each.
The Hawks came out smoking in the first quarter in New Orleans Arena and had a 24-16 lead at the end of the period. The Hornets had cut the Atlanta lead to 3 points, as Tyson Chandler slammed it through the cylinder with 24 seconds remaining. A Mike Bibby trey with one second left gave the Hawks a 46-40 advantage at the half.
New Orleans took over in the third quarter as suddenly Atlanta went ice cold. James Posey scored some key points as the quarter was winding down, and the Hornets were on top 62-58 at the end of the period. Maurice Evans and Josh Smith would contribute to a 9-1 run to open the fourth quarter for the Hawks, giving them a 67-63 lead. They would hold the lead for the rest of the contest.
Joe Johnson led the attack as he scored 24 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, in the Atlanta victory. Flip Murray came off the bench and scored 14 points, 3 assists, 3 rebounds, 2 steals, Josh Smith recorded a double-double as he scored 11 points, grabbed 11 boards, 3 blocks, 2 steals, 1 assist. Marvin Williams scored 11 points, 7 rebounds, 1 steal, Al Horford had 10 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 steal, 1 block.
Chris Paul registered a double-double to lead the Hornets, 22 points, 11 assists, 5 rebounds, 3 steals. David West scored 15 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 blocks, 1 steal, James Posey contributed 10 points, coming in off the pine, 2 rebounds, 1 assists, 1 steal. Atlanta is now 3-0, while New Orleans suffered their first loss of the young season is now 3-1.
