Cleveland Cavaliers guard Mo Williams had a team high 24 points, and LeBron James recorded a double-double as Cleveland defeated the visiting Denver Nuggets Thursday night 110-99. The Cavaliers did not suffer a third quarter drop off in this contest, just the opposite as the third quarter would prove to be a key factor in their victory. Cleveland shot 57.3% ( 47-82) from the floor for the game, in a game that was high scoring from the first quarter on.

The Denver Nuggets now have one of the elite point guards in the Association in Chauncey Billups, and they took full advantage of his talents Thursday night. Billups ran a half court offense in Detroit, if this game is any indication he will be in charge of a run and gun fast break game with the Nuggets. Denver has the talent to be able to play this style of ball, and Billups is more than capable of adapting to the quicker pace.

Not a lot of defense played in the first quarter as the Nuggets would be on top at the end of the period 36-33. The margin would remain the same at the half, as Denver took a 61-58 lead into the locker room. Cleveland has had their problems in the third quarter of many of their games so far in the young NBA campaign. Cleveland went ahead 68-67 when Delonte West hit a 23 foot trey with 8:52 left in the period. The Nuggets would be tied with the Cavaliers at 78-78, but Cleveland went on a 10-2 run to close out the quarter, and led 88-81 at the end of the period. The Cavaliers never allowed the Nuggets to get any closer in the fourth quarter.

Mo Williams would put in 24 points, 6 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, in the Cleveland victory. LeBron James dropped 22 points, dished off 11 assists, 8 rebounds, 3 steals, Daniel Gibson came off the bench and scored 15 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist. Ben Wallace had his best scoring game so far this season as he contributed 11 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal, Zydrunas Ilgauskas had 10 points, 3 rebounds, 2 steals, 1 assist, 1 block. Wally Szczerbiak added 10 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists.

Chauncey Billups was the game’s leading scorer as he had 26 points, 6 assists, 1 rebound, 1 steal. Carmelo Anthony would put in 18 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal, J.R. Smith came off the pine and added 18 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal. Kenyon Martin recorded a double-double, 12 points, 10 boards, 2 steals, Nene scored 12 points, 3 rebounds, 2 blocks, 1 steal. Cleveland with the victory improves to 7-2, while Denver is now 4-4.
