Big Fourth Quarter Key As Magic Squeezes By Mavericks 102-100

The Orlando Magic got double figure scoring from their starting five led by Rashard Lewis with 23 points, and exploded in the fourth quarter for 30 points to just get by the Dallas Mavericks Friday night 102-100. Dallas tried to extend the game into overtime, but a Jason Terry shot rimmed out giving the Magic the victory. Orlando was down by double digits early in the fourth quarter, before coming back for the dramatic win.
Dallas took the early lead as they were on top 21-17 at the end of the first quarter. They started to pull away during the second as they would walk into the locker room at the half leading 56-46. The Mavericks would have the lead up as high as 15 points in the third quarter, but Orlando would cut the deficit 80-72 at the end of the period. Jason Terry hit a 27 foot trey to put the Mavericks ahead by 11 points at 83-72 with 11:40 left in the game, and it looked like the Magic were headed for a defeat. But rather than collapsing Orlando hunkered down and went on a 22-11 run to tie the contest at 94-94 as Mickael Pietrus connected on a 26 foot trey with 3:03 remaining. The Magic were trailing 100-99 with 10 seconds left in the game when Rashard Lewis was fouled and put the Magic ahead to say hitting a pair at the line. Jameer Nelson would seal the victory, when seconds later he went 1-2 from the stripe.
Lewis would just miss a double-double, as he scored 23 points, 9 rebounds, 4 steals, 1 block. Jameer Nelson put in 21 points, 2 assists, 1 rebound, 1 steal, Pietrus added 20 points, 9 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 block. Dwight Howard recorded a double-double, 18 points, 13 boards, 2 blocks, 2 assists, 1 steal, Hedo Turkoglu put in 12 points, 5 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 block.
Josh Howard was the game’s leading scorer with 25 points, 9 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, 1 block. Dirk Nowitzki dropped 24 points, 6 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, Jason Terry would contribute 20 points, 4 rebounds, 3 steals, 3 assists, 1 block. Jason Kidd put in 13 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 steals, 1 block. Orlando improves to 6-3 while Dallas is now 2-7.
