Finley, Duncan Help Spurs Edge Kings 90-88
Posted by Stephen Rhodes under NBA Game Recap
By far the most exciting and arguably the most competitive game on Sunday’s schedule of NBA games, the contest between the San Antonio Spurs and Sacramento Kings at Arco Arena was much like a heavyweight title boxing match as there were many lead changes with neither team holding a large lead throughout. But the issue was settled as Tim Duncan’s basket with 15.5 seconds remaining gave San Antonio the win over Sacramento 90-88.
Neither team shot well yet the Spurs went into halftime leading 43-42; fast-forwarding to the fourth quarter, there were several lead changes; after Sacramento’s Beno Udrih made a pair of free throws, Duncan made a short jumper, tying the game at 88. Duncan would make the game-winning shot with 15.5 seconds left in the game; the Kings’ Quincy Douby’s 3-point attempt was nothing but air.
San Antonio was led by Michael Finley with 21 points (including three 3-pointers), 3 rebounds, an assist, a steal and a blocked shot while Duncan added 20 with 10 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 blocked shots; Roger Mason chipped in, scoring 18 (including 3 treys) with 2 rebounds, an assist and 2 steals. Sacramento was led by John Salmons with a game-high 31 points (including 3 treys), a rebound, 3 assists and 2 steals while Udrih added 16 with 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals. San Antonio (4-5) plays again on Monday as they take the short flight to Los Angeles to take on the Clippers while Sacramento (4-7) flies to Tennessee to take on the Memphis Grizzlies on Tuesday night.
