Mason’s Late 3-Pointer Boosts Spurs Past Clippers 86-83
Posted by Stephen Rhodes under NBA Game Recap

For at least one game, the Los Angeles Clippers went out on the floor of the Staples Center and actually were competitive; in their game Monday night against the San Antonio Spurs, they were thisclose to pulling off the upset win. Unfortunately for them, the Spurs’ Roger Mason had something to say about that. Mason drilled a 3-pointer with 8.4 seconds left in the game, pushing San Antonio past Los Angeles 86-83.
The Spurs made their first 4 shots as they took an early 9-2 lead, but the Clippers would respond with a 13-2 run which would give them a 15-13 lead; Chris Kaman’s 9 points and 6 rebounds would help Los Angeles take a 23-21 lead going into the second quarter. The Spurs’ Tim Duncan would score 12 points and grab 7 boards in helping San Antonio go into halftime with a 43-38 lead.
Cuttino Mobley scored the Clippers’ first 11 points of the third quarter, but 7 by the Spurs’ Michael Finley and 4 apiece by Duncan and Mason helped San Antonio expand their lead to 58-49; it was 66-56 before Clippers rookie Mike Taylor made 3 baskets which capped an 8-2 run to finish the period, reducing the Spurs’ cushion to 4. Finley scored 5 points and Duncan added 4 during a 9-2 Spurs run to begin the final quarter, giving the Spurs their largest lead of the game, 77-66.
The Spurs remained on top 81-70 when a 3-pointer by the Clippers’ Ricky Davis with 6:21 left to go along with 2 baskets by Kaman and a trey by Mobley tied the game at 83 with 1:04 remaining; after a steal by Marcus Camby, Mobley attempted which would’ve given Los Angeles the lead; however, he missed with 30 ticks on the clock. But it was Mason who won the game for San Antonio when he drained a trey with 8.4 seconds left; the Clippers’ Baron Davis tried a game-tying 3-pointer at the buzzer which was long.
Speaking of Mason and his heroics, he was the Spurs’ high scorer with 21 points (including three 3-pointers), 3 rebounds and a steal while Duncan added 20 with 15 rebounds, 4 assists and 6 blocked shots; Finley chipped in with 19 (including 3 treys) along with a rebound, 2 assists and 2 steals. Los Angeles was led by Mobley with 18 points, 3 rebounds, an assist and a blocked shot while Kaman added 17 with 13 rebounds, an assist, a steal and 3 blocked shots. San Antonio (5-5) plays again on Wednesday when they return home to host the Denver Nuggets while Los Angeles (1-9) travels to Oklahoma City to take on the Thunder – also on Wednesday.
