“So far in this still young NBA campaign it appears the “New Look” Detroit Pistons are a team of extremes. There are going to be nights like Wednesday night when they took Central Division leaders the Cleveland Cavaliers to task beating them soundly 96-89. Last week was another example of the Pistons flexing their muscles as they handed the Los Angeles Lakers their first loss last Friday night 106-95. Then there will be nights like Thursday night when they looked like a weak imitation of themselves as they lost to the Boston Celtics 98-80.“

New Season, Same Results; Rajon To The Rescue As Celts Destroy Detroit 98-80

Losing at the “New Garden” by double digits to the defending NBA Champion Boston Celtics is understandable. For the Detroit Pistons to lose at the Palace of Auburn Hills to a team that had been 0-5 on the road, and 2-9 overall is embarrassing. To lose to the Minnesota Timberwolves by 16 points, is inexcusable but that is exactly what the Pistons did Sunday night as they were slammed by the T-Wolves 106-90. Minnesota point guard Randy Foye chewed up Detroit and spit them out, as he recorded a double-double to lead the charge for the team.

This game was a good old fashioned butt kicking as the T-Wolves took the lead at 7-4, and never surrendered it for the rest of the game. Detroit could not mount any sort of an offensive flow until the fourth quarter, and it was far too little, and far too late.

Minnesota had a slim 22-19 lead at the end of the first quarter. They would quickly push their lead up to 12 points early in the second, as Foye drove the lane and put the ball up and in making it 35-23 with 5:31 left in the quarter. Detroit would score 6 straight points, cutting the lead to 35-29, but the Timberwolves soon recovered. They would enter the locker room at the half up 44-34. The T-Wolves pulled way ahead in the third quarter as they had a 76-52 lead at the end of the period. Detroit was never close to challenging in the final 12 minutes.

The Timberwolves shot 53.0% (44-83) from the floor, and 63.6% (7-11) from outside the arc for the game. Randy Foye recorded a double-double, a game high 23 points, dished off 14 assists, 2 steals, 1 rebound, 1 block, in the Minnesota victory. Ryan Gomes put in 20 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, Al Jefferson added 19 points, 8 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 block. Craig Smith came off the bench and had 16 points, 9 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 block.

Detroit was led by Tayshaun Prince with 20 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, 1 block. Jason Maxiell was the only other Pistons player in double figures, as he came off the bench and had 12 points, 8 rebounds. Kwame Brown after having some good games earlier has reverted back to form the last two games. He played 15 minutes, scored 2 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 block, 3 fouls, 2 turnovers. Do not be surprised if the Brown experiment by the Pistons will come to a halt relatively soon. Minnesota with the win is now 3-9, Detroit has a 8-5 record.
