Tapscott’s Coaching Debut A Success, Wizards Crush Warriors 124-100
Posted by Stephen Rhodes under NBA Game Recap
One thing that can be said about recently hired Washington Wizards coach Ed Tapscott – he is a genuine NBA coaching newbie. Never coached a game in high school, college or in the pros prior to Tuesday’s game against the Golden State Warriors, although he did coach his daughter’s team in a youth league back in 1993. That aside, Tapscott’s NBA coaching debut was a successful one as Caron Butler’s 35 points helped Washington easily defeat Golden State 124-100.
The game pretty much was established from the first quarter on as the Wizards led by six after one period, 14 at halftime and by 21 going into the fourth quarter. Washington had season highs in rebounds (54), matched their season-high in assists (27) and forced Golden State to turn the ball over 20 times. Washington was led by the aforementioned Butler with 35 points (including three treys), 8 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 steals while Antawn Jamison and Andray Blatche added 25 apiece – with Jamison grabbing 11 rebounds and dishing out 2 assists while Blatche grabbed 12 boards, dished out 5 assists along with 2 steals and 5 blocked shots.
Golden State was led by Corey Maggette with 17 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal while Stephen Jackson added 16 with 3 rebounds, 8 assists, 2 steals and 4 blocked shots; Andris Biedrins and Kelenna Azubuike chipped in, scoring 15 each – with Biedrins grabbing 9 rebounds, dishing out 2 assists along with a steal and 2 blocked shots while Azubuike grabbed 5 boards. Washington (2-10) hopes to build a winning streak as they host the Orlando Magic on Thursday while Golden State (5-9) makes the short trip north to take on the Boston Celtics on Wednesday.
