Neither the New Jersey Nets or the Sacramento Kings shot especially well during their game Wednesday night at Arco Arena; but as has been the habit lately for the Kings, they let the second half get away from them as Vince Carter and Devin Harris made key baskets in the fourth and overtime periods, leading New Jersey to a narrow 116-114 over Sacramento.
With the Nets leading by 11 entering the second half, Bobby Simmons made a 3-pointer and Yi Jianlian followed up with a dunk to push their advantage to 17 early in the third quarter. But the Kings would respond rather quickly as they narrowed their deficit to three with 4:03 remaining and trailing by only 82-77 entering the final period.
The Kings would score 10 straight points in the fourth quarter to assume the lead; Spencer Hawes tied the game with a trey, Brad Miller followed with a three-pointer of his own and John Salmons followed that up with a jumper, giving Sacramento a 101-96 lead with 2:18 remaining in regulation. After the Nets’ Keyon Dooling drained a 3 to tie the game at 113 with 37.5 seconds left, Miller was fouled and he made one of 2 free throws, giving Sacramento a 114-113 lead with 19 ticks left on the clock.
Harris made a layup to cut the Kings’ lead to 3 with 17 seconds remaining; After Salmons madeone of 2 free throws, Harris drained a 3, tying the game with 7.1 seconds left. Salmons would fumble the ball underneath the basket, sending the game into overtime. Trailing by a point, Harris inbounded the ball but got the ball right back; he stopped on a dime and made a jumper, giving the Nets a 115-114 lead with 12 seconds left in the game. Jarvis Hayes made a free throw with 2.4 seconds left and Miller’s half-court heave missed badly, icing the win for New Jersey.
New Jersey was led by Carter with 25 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocked shots while Brook Lopez added 20 with 8 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 blocked shots; Harris pitched in, scoring 18 with 2 rebounds and 7 assists while Dooling added 17 (including three 3-pointers) with 3 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals.
