Raptors Replace Mitchell With Assistant Coach Triano
Posted by Jeff Sack under NBA Hirings

For the third time since the beginning of the NBA season a coach has lost his job in the Association. The “Associated Press” reported that the Toronto Raptors have fired head coach Sam Mitchell and replaced him with assistant coach Jay Triano. The Raptors had gotten off to an 8-9 start in the campaign. Toronto General Manager Bryan Colangelo said that Triano would most likely remain interim coach for the rest of the season.
Mitchell had the Raptors playing in the NBA post season the last two years and was named NBA Coach Of The Year during the 2006-2007 season. Toronto has been hampered by injuries this season, including new big man Jermaine O’Neal which was a major factor in the team’s less than stellar start. Mitchell coached Toronto for four-plus seasons, his record was 156-189.
