Forbes Magazine Ranks NBA Teams For 2008
Posted by Stephen Rhodes under NBA News, NBA Off The Court Issues

One might think that a team’s net worth is based on success on the court while others think that the team’s net worth is dictated by their success off the court (merchandise sales, attendance figures at their home court, etc.). Personally, I think it is a little bit of both. But nonetheless, the teams in the NBA rank far behind their NFL brethren in what their team’s net worth is. Below are the 30 teams in the NBA, along with their net worth from the 2007-08 season; net worth is basically their current arena deal without deduction for debt (except arena debt). Also included are revenues earned and operating income. And guess what? The Oklahoma City Thunder isn’t the penny-stock of the NBA:
- New York Knicks, $613,000,000, $208 M (revenue), $29.6 M (operating income)
- Los Angeles Lakers, $584 million, $191 M (revenue), $47.9 M (operating income)
- Chicago Bulls, $504 million, $165 M (revenue), $55.4 M (operating income)
- Detroit Pistons, $480 million, $160 M (revenue), $40.4 M (operating income)
- Cleveland Cavaliers, $477 million, $159 M (revenue), $13.1 M (operating income)
- Houston Rockets, $469 million, $156 M (revenue), $31.2 M (operating income)
- Dallas Mavericks, $466 million, $153 M (revenue), -$13.6 M (operating income)
- Phoenix Suns, $452 million, $148 M (revenue), $28.9 M (operating income)
- Boston Celtics, $447 million, $149 M (revenue), $20.1 M (operating income)
- San Antonio Spurs, $415 million, $138 M (revenue), $19.0 M (operating income)
