There were two winning streaks on the line as tip-off occurred Friday night at the “New Garden” as the Boston Celtics played host to the Portland Trail Blazers. The Blazers had won their previous six games, and the “Green Team” had ten straight victories before their meeting, so one streak would come to an end. The defending NBA Champions took the up and coming team from the “Great Northwest” to school winning decisively 93-78. Boston had six players in double figures, two with double-doubles, and they won the battle of the boards convincingly 43-31.

It was the first time that Portland center Greg Oden played on the parquet floor, and the sooner he can put the experience out of his mind the better he will feel. Oden did not impress, playing 18 minutes, scoring 5 points, 6 rebounds, 1 steal, 1 block, 1 turn over, before fouling out. He will have a year to think about it, for barring the Trail Blazers meeting the Celtics in the NBA Finals, this will be their only trip to Boston this season.

Portland played tough in the first quarter, as Boston led but only by 3 points 24-21 at the end of the period. The Blazers went stone cold in the second quarter and the Celtics led 49-36 as the game reached the half. The third quarter was pretty much a repeat of the second, with Boston leading 74-51 heading into the final 12 minutes. Portland was never a threat to the Celtics in the fourth quarter.

Ray Allen was the game’s leading scorer as he put in 19 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist, in the Boston victory. Rajon Rondo continues to impress with 16 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists, 2 steals, Kevin Garnett recorded a double-double, 14 points, 11 rebounds, 4 assists. Leon Powe came off the bench and scored 14 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, Paul Pierce added 13 points, 4 assists, 1 steal. Celtics center Kendrick Perkins was also credited with a double-double, 12 points, 12 boards, 2 assists.

LaMarcus Aldridge scored 13 points, 3 rebounds, 1 steal, Travis Outlaw came off the bench with 13 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 block. Brandon Roy added 12 points, 3 assists, 2 rebounds, 2 steals. Boston improves to 19-2, Portland is 14-7.
