The New Orleans Hornets beat up the Memphis Grizzlies during the first quarter of their contest Saturday night, and the Grizzlies never really recovered as the Hornets went on to win 106-87. All-Star point guard Chris Paul led the way for the Hornets with a double-double, as their team shot 52.1% (38-73) from the floor 55% (11-20) outside the arc for the game. The team also shot 95% (19-20) from the line, a rarity in the Association in the first decade of the new millennium.

The crowd at the New Orleans Arena saw their home team come out smoking in the first quarter, while Memphis looked like they were still trying to find their footing and the Hornets were ahead at the end of the period 37-16. Memphis was so far behind after the first that they scored the first 9 points of the second, and still trailed by 12 points 37-25 after rookie O.J. Mayo hit a trey with 10:07 to play in the period. New Orleans answered back with a 10-2 run as James Posey hit a trey putting his club ahead 47-27 with 5:37 remaining. At the half the Hornets were totally in charge with the score 58-39

Peja Stojakovic greeted the Grizzlies with back to back treys to open the third. Darko Milicic slammed a ball through the cylinder in between Peja’s long range bombs, but David West drove the lane and laid the ball up and in giving New Orleans a 66-41 lead with 10:44 left in the period. By the time the third quarter was over, the game was wrapped up as the Hornets led 90-61. The Grizzlies never were a credible threat at any time in the final 12 minutes of play.

Chris Paul recorded a double-double, a game high 21 points, 11 assists, 5 rebounds, and 3 steals, in the New Orleans victory. Peja Stojakovic added 20 points, 1 rebound, and 1 assist, while David West put in 19 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, and 1 block. Rasual Butler contributed 11 points, 2 rebounds, and 1 block.

Marc Gasol came off the bench to lead Memphis with 21 points, 7 rebounds, 2 blocks, 2 assists, and 1 steal. Rookie O.J. Mayo put in 18 points, 5 assists, and 3 rebounds, and Hakim Warrick came off the bench and added 10 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and 1 block. New Orleans improves to 11-6, Memphis falls to 5-16.
