When you play the San Antonio Spurs there is one given; Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, and Manu Ginobili are going to score. The way you can defeat them is to shut down the rest of the team around the trio. The New Orleans Hornets adhered to that philosophy Wednesday night, as they held the Spurs to shooting just 38.8% (31-80) from the floor for the game en route to defeating San Antonio 90-83. The three stars combined for 53 of the 83 points by the Spurs, no one else on the team scored more than 7 points. The Hornets were led by David West who scored a game high 21 points, they also had double-doubles from Chris Paul and Tyson Chandler.

To say this contest started out slowly would be a vast understatement as the Spurs led at the end of the first quarter 15-14. Both teams picked up the tempo somewhat in the second as San Antonio walked into the locker room at the half leading 42-37.

The Spurs looked like they were starting to take the contest over early in the third as Matt Bonner slammed it home with authority putting his team on top 50-41 with 8:59 in the period. The Hornets came charging back with a 13-3 run, taking the lead 54-53 as Rasual Butler hit a 24 foot trey with 4:58 remaining. The lead volleyed back and forth the next few possessions, but momentum went back towards San Antonio as they held a 70-63 advantage at the end of the quarter.

The fourth started out much like the third as the Spurs pulled ahead early leading 79-72 when Matt Bonner hit a mid-range shot with 5:03 left to play. New Orleans then scored the next 13 straight points, taking an 85-79 lead as “Super-Sub” James Posey drained a 25 foot trey with 1:06 remaining in the game. The Spurs never recovered.

David West had a game high 21 points, 9 rebounds, 1 steal, and 1 block, in the New Orleans victory. This was not just another night that Chris Paul recorded a double-double, Paul set an NBA record by getting at least 1 steal in 106 straight contests, breaking the record set by Alvin Robertson in the 1985-1986 campaign. Paul put up 19 points, 12 assists, 6 rebounds, 3 steals, and 1 block, while Rasual Butler added 13 points, 5 rebounds, 2 steals, 1 assist, and 1 block. Tyson Chandler recorded a double-double, 10 points, 11 boards, and 4 blocks.

Tony Parker scored 20 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 1 steal, to lead the Spurs.  Manu Ginobili added 17 points, 5 assists, 1 steal, and 1 block, while Tim Duncan recorded a double-double, 16 point, 11 boards, 1 block, and 1 assist.  New Orleans has a record of 15-7, San Antonio is now 15-9.
