The Cavaliers had to make sure Wednesday night that their full attention was on their opponent, the Charlotte Bobcats, and not on their impending huge regular season showdown Friday with the Boston Celtics. Well, at least for a half. Led by a huge outburst to start the game, the Cavs had it in cruise control for most of the night, never trailing as they pounded Charlotte 111-81.

The team started early, going up 13-4 right off the bat, and then ending the first quarter already ahead 29-12. Bobcats coach Larry Brown knew right off the bat that his team was in a whole heap of trouble vs the Cavs, who were looking to rebound after their stunning loss on Sunday vs the Wizards. “We never competed a lick,” Brown said. “There’s some players that some of our guys play against they don’t think they have a chance. If you look at our history, maybe that’s why you don’t win. You don’t expect to win. The first minute of the game, you look out there and feel like you’ve got no chance. It’s disappointing.”

LeBron James, who was more intent on watching the last minutes of the Celtics loss to the Rockets in the locker room post game rather than talk to the media, had a game-high 21 points with four rebounds and four assists. With James taking a rest on the bench after the first quarter, the Cavs buried the Bobcats with a 14-2 spurt to open up their lead to 43-14. The Cavs were still up by 22 by the time James checked back in with seven minutes left in the half.

Daniel Gibson, coming off the bench to play 24 minutes, had 15 points, as did Mo Williams and Wally Szczerbiak. Anderson Varejao had 14, and rookie J.J. Hickson had 13 points in 23 minutes. The team shot a blistering 60 percent, and held the Bobcats to just 39 percent from the field. They held Charlotte in check to the tune of just 14 points in the third quarter to lead 84-56 entering the fourth quarter.

The focus now for the 28-6 Cavs will turn to Friday, as they play the Celtics for the first time since a loss on opening night. The Cavs own the best record in the league over the 29-8 Celtics, and it will be interesting to see how the Friday night affair between these two East powerhouses plays out.
