Triple-Double By LBJ As Cavaliers Shoot Down Grizzlies 102-87

Coming off their convincing win over one of the Association’s best in the  Boston Celtics on Friday night at the Q, the Cavs took to the court against a much easier opponent Tuesday night in the Memphis Grizzlies. As usually is the case though, the Cavs didn’t play like the Grizzlies were an easier opponent, at least for the first half, as they let Memphis hang around before finally putting them away with a solid second half in their 102-87 win.

The first half was tight, as after the Cavs jumped out to a 7-0 the Grizzlies woke up, and kept it close from there, and by the time the teams took to the locker rooms, it was a three-point game at 47-44. Cleveland though has “The King” and LeBron James took over in the second half, making sure this night would not be a repeat of the teams lackluster loss to the Wizards a week ago Sunday.

James had a triple-double, throwing in 30 points, with 11 rebounds and 11 assists. He was helped out by Delonte West with 19 points, and Mo Williams had 16 points. Daniel Gibson came off the bench for 11 points as well. Cleveland started to run away with the game outscoring the Grizzlies 29-22 in the third quarter, and then in the fourth salted it away with some key three’s and some big shots from James as they built a 15-point lead.

Memphis, now 11-27 on the season, were led by guard Kyle Lowry, who had 25 points. Hakim Warrick had 16 points off the bench for Memphis. Rookie O.J. Mayo was held to just six points on 3-for-9 shooting in 31 minutes.

After the close first half, LeBron scored 17 in the third quarter, which was what put the team ahead for good. He asked Mike Brown to stay in the game to complete the triple-double, and did so in style, with a niffty behind the back pass to rookie J.J. Hickson for a layup in the fourth quarter to wrap up the night. It was Jame’s second triple-double of the 08-09 season.

The Cavs will have to become road warriors to keep up their red hot start to the 08-09 season, as at 30-6 they will play 6 of their next 8 on the road, and starting tonight it was 7 of 9. Their next test will be another meeting with the 16-22 Bulls in Chicago. The Cavs are already 3-0 vs the Bulls this season, including two wins over them in November and one Friday January 2, in Cleveland 117-92.
