Denver Holds On As Dallas Come Back Attempt Falls Short Nuggets Win 99-97

Dallas Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki literally tried to defeat the Denver Nuggets all by himself Tuesday night as the veteran scored a game high 44 points, and 14 boards, leading a second half surge that fell short as the Nuggets held on for a 99-97 victory. Dallas was down by double-digits at the half but they would cause the Denver fans at the Pepsi Center a lot of anguish before they would fall to defeat.
Denver started out on fire in the opening period jumping out to a 33-26 advantage at the end of the first. The Nuggets looked like they were ready to run away with the game as the reached the half leading 60-47. The Mavericks came galloping back in the third, as Jose Juan Berea hit a shot at the line and the game was tied at 72-72 with 8 seconds left in period. Chris Andersen heaved a 47 foot trey at the buzzer and Denver led at the end of the quarter 78-72.
Jason Terry with 2:11 remaining in the fourth put the Mavericks on top 93-91 when he drained a three point shot from 25 feet away. For the next few minutes Dallas would pull ahead only to find Denver tying the contest with their next possession. Chauncey Billups would win the game at the charity stripe after Terry fouled him with 2 seconds to play and the score tied at 97-97. Billups hit both of his free throws accounting for the final score.
Billups led the Denver attack with 23 points, 4 assists, 3 rebounds, while Nene added 20 points, 6 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 steal. Dahntay Jones had a strong game as he scored 16 points, 5 steals, 3 assists, and 3 rebounds, Chris Andersen recorded a double-double, 15 points, 10 boards, 3 steals, and 2 blocks. Anthony Carter put in 13 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists.
Dirk Nowitzki had an incredible game, but very little support from his teammates, he scored 44 points, grabbed 14 boards, and had 1 steal. Jason Terry had 16 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and 1 steal, while Brandon Bass added 10 points, 5 rebounds, and 1 block. Denver improves to 26-13, Dallas is 22-16.
