This was one of those games that the Sacramento Kings may as well have just dialed in; in their game against the Orlando Magic Tuesday night at Arco Arena, their lack of perimeter defense was their undoing as the Magic connected on a NBA-record 23 three-pointers; the end result of the long-distance damage was a 139-107 annihilation of Sacramento by Orlando.
To illustrate how big the three-pointers were for the Magic, of the 81 shots that they attempted, 37 of them were 3-point attempts (making 23 of them) yet Dwight Howard was very effective inside as he abused the Kings’ big men at will. Both teams shot very well – especially Orlando at 62% – during the first half and the Magic raced to a 75-56 halftime lead.
The 3-pointers kept coming for Orlando as Jameer Nelson connected on a pair on a span of 80 seconds as they would drain 7 of them in the third quarter, padding their lead to 107-85 going into the final period. For the final 12 minutes of the game, Howard sat out while the Magic coasted to the win. The loss for the Kings was their 12th in their last 14 games.
Orlando’s high scorer was Howard with 25 points, 15 rebounds, an assist, 4 steals and a blocked shot while Nelson added 23 (including 5 treys) with 2 rebounds, 11 assists and 5 steals; Rashard Lewis pitched in, scoring 19 (including 3 three-pointers) with 3 rebounds and 3 assists while Hedo Turkoglu poured in 17 (including 3 treys) with 2 rebounds, 8 assists, a steal but committed 5 turnovers. Even J.J. Redick joined in the fun, scoring 15 (including 4 three-pointers) with 2 rebounds.
Sacramento was led by Kevin Martin with 30 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists and a steal while Francisco Garcia, from off the bench, added 15 with 5 rebounds, 5 assists and a steal. Orlando (31-8) plays again on Friday when they travel south to Los Angeles to take on the Lakers while Sacramento (9-30) take the bus west on I-80 to Oakland to face the Golden State Warriors on Wednesday.
