Nuggets Eclipse Suns In Over Time 119-113

Thursday night the Denver Nuggets and Phoenix Suns had a roller coaster game that would start out with the Suns looking like they were heading for an easy win after the first quarter, would end regulation with the score tied 103-103, and would finish with the Nuggets winning the contest in overtime by the score of 119-113. The victory was the seventh win in the last eight games for Denver. Chauncey Billups was the game’s leading scorer with 26 points, Kenyon Martin added 24, and center Nene recorded a double-double to spark the Denver win. Phoenix played without center Shaquille O’Neal, who according to team officials was not hurt but not activated for the contest.
Phoenix came out strong in the first quarter, and held a 35-26 lead at the end of the period. Denver would be down by just 3 points at 53-50, when Linas Kleiza slammed the ball through the cylinder with 1:45 left to play in the second. The Suns would end the quarter with a flurry and walked into the locker room at the half leading 62-56. Denver came back in the third as Chauncey Billups hit a mid-range jumper with 54 seconds to play, and the game was tied 82-82 at the end of the quarter.
The lead volleyed back and forth in the final 12 minutes of regulation, J.R. Smith drained a 24 foot trey with 1:23 remaining, which pulled the Nuggets even with the Suns at 103-103. Grant Hill attempted a layup with 3 seconds to play, but was blocked by Nene, and the game went into the extra period. Phoenix appeared out of gas in the overtime, as the Nuggets quickly established the lead, and the Suns never seemed to be able to get over the hump, leading to the Denver win.
Chauncey Billups was the game’s leading scorer with 26 points, 8 assists, 3 rebounds, 3 steals, and 1 block, while Kenyon Martin added 24 points, 8 rebounds, 7 steals, 2 assists, and 1 block. J.R. Smith scored 19 points, 7 assists, 5 rebounds, and 2 steals, Linas Kleiza came off the bench and had 18 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists. Nene recorded a double-double, 17 points, 14 boards, 2 steals, 1 assist, and 1 block.
Grant Hill led the Suns with 25 points, 8 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 steal, while Amare Stoudemire added 21 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals, and 1 block. Steve Nash recorded a double-double, 20 points, 14 assists, 7 rebounds, and 1 block, Jason Richardson dropped 16 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 blocks, and 2 steals. Matt Barnes scored 13 points, 6 rebounds, and 1 assist. Denver is now 27-13, while Phoenix is 22-14.
