Zo Calls It A Career; Mourning Announces Retirement
Posted by Jeff Sack under NBA Retirement

Alonzo Mourning played 15 years in the NBA, starting with the Charlotte Hornets, a stint with the New Jersey Nets for two seasons, and the rest of his career with the Miami Heat. Ironically the former Georgetown star, never played for the franchise that team’s nick name best personified him, the Warriors. The Associated Press reported Thursday that the veteran announced his retirement from the Association, ending speculation that he would attempt another comeback after the horrific right leg injury he suffered last season ending his campaign, and ultimately his career. Mourning in December 2007, tore his patella tendon, and quadricep muscle, for which he under went surgery.
Mourning told reporters in the press conference that he walks away from the game with no regrets. The veteran said “It’s not a sad day, but it’s a day to celebrate. I can think of a million people right now that would have loved to walk the path I’ve walked. The ups and the downs made it even more joyous. When you’ve got something you love and you’re passionate about, it’s hard to let that go. My health is more important than anything. God willing I’ll be able to live another 40 or 50 years, and I want to do it in a comfortable state. Right now I’m there!”
Mourning had come back from a kidney transplant back in 2003. If he had not gotten back into the Association, he would never have earned that NBA Championship ring he received with Miami in 2006. Mourning who will turn 38 in February, averaged 17.1 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 2.8 blocks in his career.
