Kevin Garnett 1.24

To borrow a phrase from “America’s Newest Sweetheart” Tina Fey, the NBA franchise from Dallas did not look very “Mavericky” on Sunday when they took the court in the “New Garden” to face the Boston Celtics. And did the Celtics take advantage of the Mavericks tentative play? “You Betcha” as Boston shot 53.8% (50-93) and a red hot 59.3% (16-27) from outside the arc, and destroyed Dallas 124-100. The “Green Team” was led by a trio of players who scored 23 points each, Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, and Eddie House, and point guard Rajon Rondo recorded a double-double in the victory. The win was the eighth straight for Boston.

The Celtics have been a team of streaks this entire campaign. They lost to the Denver Nuggets on November 14, for their second loss of the season, and then pulled off a 19 game winning streak. Christmas Day they fell to the Lakers, and proceeded to lose 7 of their next nine. After bottoming out against the Cavaliers on January 9, they have gone through a resurgence with their current streak. There was a lot of talk during the fallow period for Boston, that the team had gotten old over night, and they were not in the class of Orlando, Cleveland, or the Lakers. One would think that this current surge they have gone through will quiet that talk.

Boston was kicking tail and taking names in the first half, as they would jump out to a 38-23 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Celtics were just getting warmed up, as they virtually ended the game at the half walking into the locker room on top 74-47. The Mavericks were able to make up a little ground in the third, but it was too deep a hole to climb out of as Boston led 103-78 with 12 minutes to play. Dallas was never close to being a factor in the fourth quarter.

Ray Allen scored 23 points, 7 assists, 5 rebounds, 1 block, and 1 steal, while Kevin Garnett added 23 points, 4 assists, 2 rebounds, and 1 steal. Eddie House came off the pine and dropped 23 points, 2 assists, 2 rebounds, and 2 steals, and Rajon Rondo recorded a double-double, 13 points, 14 assists, 7 rebounds, and 4 steals.

Jason Terry came off the bench for the Mavericks, and was the game’s leading scorer with 27 points, 2 assists, 2 rebounds, and 2 steals. Dirk Nowitzki scored 18 points, and had 7 rebounds, while Josh Howard added 18 points, 5 rebounds, and 1 assist. Boston improves to 37-9, they will host the Sacramento Kings Wednesday, Dallas is 25-19, they host the Golden State Warriors on Wednesday.
