Many Cavaliers fans have felt all along that guard Mo Williams is deserving of an All-Star roster spot for the Eastern Conference. After Tuesday nights outing against the Sacramento Kings in the Cavs 117-110 win, maybe the rest of the country will start to take notice of Williams as well.
The Cavs starting guard was in a zone, hitting for a career-high 43 points, hitting a career-high seven 3-pointers to go along with eight rebounds, 11 assists and one steal. Williams was the key force in the Cavaliers coming back from a 44-33 deficit at the 7:22 mark of the second quarter, as he scored 13 points in a key run to put the Cavs up 60-56 at the half.
Williams had 25 points in the first half, and James added 16 points as the Cavs quickly erased the deficit against one of the worst in the league in the Kings, who fall to 10-36 with the setback. The Kings to their credit kept it close in the second half, and even did have a 71-69 lead in the third quarter, but Williams was always able to answer, hitting another big three to make it 73-71 with 6:24 left in the third.
All the guard did was put up 39 points by the end of the third quarter, as the Cavaliers led 88-82 entering the fourth. Their play put the Kings to rest finally, as Daniel Gibson hit three free throws to start the quarter to make it 91-82, and then Williams hit a driving layup to make it 97-84 with 9:32 to play.
Williams’ final hoop of the night, on a jump shot, made it 105-87 with 7:24 to play, and the Kings were never all that close from there to the end. The Kings closed the game on an 8-3 run in garbage time to wrap up the scoring at 117-110. The Cavaliers move to 21-0 at home, and better yet, continue to be the best in the East with a mark of 35-8.
Even with the big night from Williams, James did his damage, hitting for a triple-double, 23 points, 15 rebounds and 11 assists. Williams was 15-for-24 from the field, and Sasha Pavlovic hit for 12 points on 5-for-8 shooting. The Cavs shot 47 percent from the field, and hit for 11 three pointers in the game, with Williams nailing 7 of them.
The team will now travel South to take on the very tough Orlando Magic in a big East showdown on Thursday night in a nationally televised game on TNT at 8pm.
