The Butler Hits One At The Buzzer, Wizards Nip Pacers 119-117

Washington Wizards forward Caron Butler

Anyone who is a fan of or follows the Washington Wizards knows that because of Gilbert Arenas being shelved, they only have two scoring options – Antawn Jamison and Caron Butler.  In the Wizards’ game Sunday against the Indiana Pacers, neither one disappointed as they combined for 69 points; however, it took a buzzer-beater by Butler to help Washington edge Indiana 119-117 at the Verizon Center.

Both teams shot very well in the first half as Indiana outscored Washington 37-29 in the first quarter while the Wizards outscored the Pacers 32-26; Indiana would go into their locker room with a slim 2-point lead.  Jamison kept the Wizards alive with his scoring, but would miss both of his shot attempts in the fourth quarter.

The Wizards’ Nick Young and Butler each made one of two free throws to cut their deficit to 110-105 with 3:45 left in the game; Butler would then hit 3 consecutive baskets to cut the Pacers’ lead to 112-111 with 1:32 remaining.  After Indiana’s Danny Granger hit a jumper with 1:18 to play to up their lead to 114-111, Butler made a pair of 3 pointers to give Washington a 117-114 lead with 20.9 seconds on the game clock.  After a Wizards timeout, Butler dribbled to the left corner and drained the game-winning jumper at the horn.

Washington’s high scorer was Butler with 35 points, 13 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal while Jamison added 34 (including 4 three-pointers) with 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals; Young pitched in 20 with 3 rebounds.  Indiana was led by Granger with 29 points (including 4 treys), 5 rebounds and 4 assists while T.J. Ford added 23 with 3 rebounds, 7 assists and a steal.

Troy Murphy chipped in 18 with 10 rebounds and an assist while Jarrett Jack poured in 16 with 4 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal.  Washington (11-40) plays again on Tuesday when they fly south to Atlanta to take on the Hawks while Indiana (20-32) returns home to host the Cleveland Cavaliers – also on Tuesday.
