Hakim Warrick came into this game with many of his friends and family in the arena to watch the 6-11 forward make his annual homecoming trip. Warrick did not disappoint by virtually flying to the rim on every other play. The former Syracuse standout tied a career high in points with 31 and at times looked unstoppable posting up the defensive guru that is Samuel Dalembert. But on the other side stood Andre Iguodala who stole the show in the fourth quarter with 9 points, including the game winning shot with 26 seconds left to lead Philadelphia past Memphis 91-87. Iguodala finished the ball game with 18 points.
Sixers coach Tony DiLeo told to the Associated Press, “A lot of situations in the past, we didn’t execute defensively down the stretch. We did in this game, so that was a good sign that we learned.” Point guard Andre Miller led the Sixers in scoring with 24 points and 9 assists to compliment his stat line.
Philadelphia has seen many double digit leads slip away in the past month and it appeared history was going to repeat itself. Midway through the fourth quarter, Memphis found themselves trailing by 12 when O.J. Mayo and Mike Conley Jr. answered the call to battle the Grizzlies back. Mayo nailed a 3-pointer with 48 seconds left to tie the game at 87. But Iguodala answered quickly with a hard layup over Marc Gasol to put the Sixers up for good.
“We can’t fault the effort, we just couldn’t get the big stop,” Memphis coach Lionel Hollins told the Associated Press. “We’ll refocus and come out running.” Mayo finished the game with 16 points and also recorded his 1,000 career point.
The Sixers, who have been able to go 5-2 on a seven game home stand, recorded their 4th straight win and are heating up just before the all-star break. The once sub .500 team now finds themselves at a cool 27-24. The Sixers have won 14 of 18 games and are finding their niche just in time.
Iguodala and company will get a much needed break as no Sixer was selected to the All-Star game in Phoenix. Tony DiLeo told Andre Iguodala to enjoy this All-Star break because it would likely be the last one he misses for quite awhile.
