Celtics Defeat Wade-Less Heat In Over Time 112-108
Posted by Jeff Sack under NBA Game Recap

One of my all time favorite quotes has been attributed to former NBA star Michael Ray Richardson. Michael Ray was blessed with tremendous athletic skills. However he was also cursed with inner demons that negated his gifts, short circuiting his NBA career. Michael Ray was playing for a club one season that was coming apart at the seams. A reporter asked Richardson what was wrong with his team to which Michael Ray responded “The ship be sinking.” The reporter asked the player how far it could sink? Richardson looked the reporter in the eye and said “Sky’s the limit!”
Most likely if you asked any Boston Celtics player before the game was a win against the Miami Heat Wednesday night critical they would have responded with a firm no. However make no mistake about it, the good ship S.S. Celtics was taking on water after losing their last two contests. A Wednesday night win was necessary at least for the club’s mental well being.
The fates smiled on the “New Garden” Wednesday night as the Heat were without one man wrecking crew Dwyane Wade who missed his first game of the season with a right hip flexor. But the Celtics were severely handicapped also still without Kevin Garnett who has missed 13 straight games with a strained right knee. The “Green Team“ also were without the services of Ray Allen who hyper-extended his elbow in the loss to the Bulls on Tuesday. Boston was basically back to the 2007 version of the club without Al Jefferson.
Paul Pierce and Rajon Rondo took things to the next level as they led the Celtics to beat the Heat 112-108 in overtime. Both players recorded double-doubles leading the win and also their second consecutive Atlantic Division Title. Miami got big games from their rookies, Michael Beasley scored 21 points while Mario Chalmers added 19.
Okay will all the so called “NBA Experts“ who said that Boston signing Stephon Marbury would lead to the destruction of the Celtics franchise as well as end Modern Society as we know it please come clean and admit you were clueless? Because the man who earned the nick-name “Starbury” not as a compliment but as a put down has not reported to the Celtics yet! Marbury was in the starting lineup Wednesday night , here is his line total; Marbury scored 4 points, he went 1-3 from the field, 0-1 from outside the arc, and hit 2-3 at the line. He also dished off 6 assists, 1 block and 1 rebound in 31 minutes of play. Does not read like the line total of a Diva or a Cancer does it? As I wrote before he signed with the Celtics, Boston was a strong enough team to make Stephon conform!
The game would be deadlocked at the end of regulation with the scoreboard showing 100-100. However Boston took over in the extra period scoring the first 8 points, and they never looked back sending home Celtics Nation in a jubilant mood.
Paul Pierce had a game high 36 points, 11 boards and 5 assists while Rajon Rondo scored 27 points, dished off 10 assists, 3 rebounds and 1 steal. Eddie House contributed 16 points coming off the bench, 2 assists and 2 rebounds while Kendrick Perkins added 13 points, 9 rebounds, 4 blocks and 2 assists.
Michael Beasley led the Heat with 21 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 block while Mario Chalmers dropped 19 points, 9 assists, 4 rebounds and 2 assists. Jermaine O’Neal scored 17 points, 6 assists, 5 rebounds and 2 blocks while Udonis Haslem added 11 points and had 4 rebounds. Boston improves to 51-18, while Miami is 36-31.
