The Washington Huskies, in their game Thursday against the Mississippi State Bulldogs, faced a bit of a dilemma in their contest: with their team captain in foul trouble and a broken nose and their top two scorers basically ineffective, who would they turn to for offense? Unheralded Quincy Pondexter, who averaged 11.5 PPG during their regular season.
Ironically, the Bulldogs forgot about him, and Pondexter would respond as he scored twice his scoring average (23 points) as Washington easily disposed of Mississippi State 71-58 at Portland, OR.
With Jon Brockman on the bench and the Huskies leading 16-14 in the first half, Pondexter took over as he scored on a dunk, a putback and a pair of jumpers – which capped a 15-6 run – putting Washington up 31-20 late in the half. The Huskies scored the first six points of the second half, which gave them a 44-27 cushion, which they would not relinquish.
Washington’s high scorer was Pondexter with 23 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal while Brockman added 10 with 15 rebounds and an assist. Mississippi State was led by Barry Stewart with 14 points, a rebound and a steal while Kodi Augustus added 9 with 7 rebounds and a steal. Washington will have a tougher opponent on Saturday when they take on the Purdue Boilermakers.
