Late Free Throws Help Golden Eagles Fend Off Aggies 58-57

Marquette Golden Eagles forward Lazar Hayward

Lazar Hayward, 6th-seeded Marquette’s third leading scorer, had an interesting role in their game against the 11th-seeded Aggies of Utah State.  He scored the first and last points for the Golden Eagles – with the last points being the equalizer as Hayward scored 26 points, including a pair of late free throws, leading Marquette to the tight 58-57 win over Utah State Friday at Boise, ID.

Marquette would blow a 14-point lead, then overcome a 49-43 deficit – with Hayward leading the charge.  He would put the Golden Eagles up 52-51 on a pair of free throws with 1:45 left to go and they would hold off the Aggies the rest of the way.  Marquette’s high scorer was Hayward with 26 points (including three 3-pointers) and 8 rebounds while Jerel McNeal added 14 with 3 rebounds, 2 assists, a steal and a block but also turned the ball over 5 times.

Utah State was led by Jared Quayle with 18 points (including four treys), 8 rebounds, 4 assists and a steal while Gary Wilkinson and Tai Wesley added 15 each – with Wilkinson grabbing 4 rebounds, dishing out an assist along with a block while Wesley grabbed 4 rebounds, dished out an assist along with a block but also committing 5 turnovers.  Marquette plays again on Sunday when they take on Missouri.
