Missouri Tigers forward Leo Lyons
The 3rd-seeded Missouri Tigers definitely had their hands full going up against the 6th-seeded Marquette Golden Eagles on Sunday as this was by far the toughest game for the Tigers in this tournament.  The Golden Eagles top scorers made their points, as usual; however, it took a bench player for the Tigers – Kim English – to decide the issue; English calmly sank a pair of free throws with only 5.5 seconds left, helping Missouri edge Marquette 83-79 at Boise, ID.

Leo Lyons converted a 3-point play for Missouri, giving them a 79-78 lead with 48.7 seconds left in the game after previously trailing by four.  Marquette’s Jerel McNeal came back to make one of 2 free throws to tie the game; that’s when the Tigers’ English made the two free throws with 5.5 seconds remaining which iced the game.

Missouri’s high scorer was Lyons with 18 points, 4 rebounds, a steal and a block while English added 17 (including three 3-pointers) with a rebound; Matt Lawrence chipped in 16 with 3 rebounds and an assist while  DeMarre Carroll scored 15 with 8 rebounds, 3 assists, a steal and a block.

Marquette was led by McNeal with 30 points (including 3 treys), 5 rebounds, 4 assists and a steal while Wesley Matthews added 24 with 7 rebounds and 2 steals; Lazar Hayward notched a double-double as he scored 13 with 11 rebounds.  Missouri plays again on Thursday when they take on Memphis.
