University of North Carolina junior guard Ty Lawson had heard the whispers over the years; he knew what the questions regarding him were. He had the gifts, but did he have the guts? No guts no glory, right? Saturday night he may have finally silenced those whisperers forever. Lawson came back after missing two weeks with a toe injury lit up the LSU Tigers for 23 points and UNC is heading to the “Sweet Sixteen” after taming the Tigers and winning 84-70.  Lawson looked rusty in the first half as he scored just 2 points. However when he returned for the second half he exploded for 21 points, and led his team to victory.

The lead went back and forth between the two opponents for the first 14 minutes of the first half. However North Carolina picked up their offensive play in the last 6 minutes and held a 38-29 advantage when the two teams went to their locker rooms at the half.

Marcus Thornton would put the Tigers on top 42-41 with 17:35 left in the second as he drove the lane putting the ball up and in the bucket. The two teams were deadlocked at 63-63 with a little over 8 minutes to play. That was when UNC put it into that next gear. Tyler Hansbrough hit a mid range jumper with 4:48 remaining giving North Carolina a 74 63 lead. LSU could never recover.

Ty Lawson had  23 points, 6 assists, 2 steals and 1 rebound. Wayne Ellington also scored 23 points, 4 assists, 3 rebounds, 2 steals and 1 block. Tigers guard Marcus Thornton led all players with 25 points, 6 rebounds, 1 assists and 1 steal. UNC will match-up next weekend against Gonzaga.
